The Swiss startup Groosker uses QR codes as a digital wallet. The user scans a QR code on an ecommerce site with his mobile phone and payment information, stored with Groosker, which is then used to complete the transaction, much as it would on a point-of-sale device in a store. QR code usage is growing rapidly, particularly in China, where it’s use has expanded 4x year-over-year, according to Mary Meeker’s internet trends report from May 2o13. Groosker launched in 2012.
