First, BBVA purchases Simple to own substantial banking technology. Now, it is making its play to own the players who can invent the next FinTech innovation. Yesterday, BBVA scored two substantial hires, stealing Jeff Dennes from SunTrust Banks Inc. to head BBVA’s business development and digital transformation division, and Mark Jamison from Capital One Financial Corp. to be director of BBVA’s customer experience and business intelligence division. Dennes, who is now on his fourth gig in four years, was most recently SVP-head of digital at SunTrust. Prior to that, he did about two and a half years at Huntington National Bank as its chief digital officer. Jamison, meanwhile, was chief digital officer of Capital One, and previously headed the bank’s Capital One Labs unit. Jamison appears to be a real get for BBVA — as of today, he had yet to update his LinkedIn profile with the new BBVA position. Jamison, who was located in McLean, Va., for Cap One, will work out of Madrid, Spain, for BBVA. BBVA framed the hires as part of “BBVA’s transformation” in order “to boost the development of new digital businesses.” Sounds about right.
