Dogecoin is hitting the track at Talladega this weekend. Car #98 at Talladega this weekend will be driven by Josh Wise and sponsored by the community of users of the virtual currency Dogecoin. Users of dogecoin previously raised funds to successfully send the Jamaican bobsled team to the Sochi Olympics. Dogecoin, based on a humorous meme about a dog with questionable English skills, does not seem to take itself seriously. (Users of dogecoins are nicknamed “shibes” after the shiba inu breed of dog featured in the meme.) At its launch in December 2013, it looked to be just another virtual currency trying to capitalize on the popularity of Bitcoin. But when Dogecoin users on Reddit raised $55,000 — or 67 million dogecoins — to sponsor the previously unsponsored 98 car, virtual currency enthusiasts, as well as NASCAR fans, took notice. Images of what the car’s “wrap” will look like were released this past weekend.
