The number of fintech startups launched last month appears to have increased about 13%, according to a Bank Innovation analysis. Bank Innovation did an analysis of major repositories of startup listings, including AngelList and F6S, to gauge the volume of startups targeting the financial services sector. We found that at least 60 startups were launched were listed last month, up from 53 in March 2014. A total of 1,315 startups were listed on AngelList on May 16, the date on which we did our tally. About 7.2% of the nearly 9,000 technology startups currently seeking funding around the world were aimed at the financial services sector, our research shows. These 656 startups, it should be noted, did not necessarily start their fundraising last month. Specifically, the 656 startups were providing services that can be categorized as pertaining to either “banking,” “finance,” “bitcoin” or “insurance.” One notable startup from last month was Centscere, a payments venture which aims to “turn your social media actions into charitable donations.” Essentially, Centscere taps a user’s social graph to facilitate charitable contributions.
